About Department

The Department of English at K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering serves as a pivotal department with highly qualified faculty members who are dedicated to teaching the English language effectively and providing continuous training in speaking. The department features a well-equipped language laboratory with updated software to train students in LSRW skills and a career lab for instruction in interview skills, group discussions, and presentations.

As per the curriculum of Anna University, the department offers Technical English and Professional English for first-year students, Interpersonal Skills – Listening/Speaking (laboratory-based) and Business Communication (laboratory-based) for second-year students, and Professional Communication (laboratory-based) for third-year students. Beyond the curriculum, numerous initiatives have been introduced to enhance students' communication and soft skills. The department believes in activity-based teaching, ensuring students develop their language skills effectively.

The art of teaching and learning fosters an environment where students practice English through constant speaking. They receive structured training to support their career advancement. The department works tirelessly to achieve strong academic results while also focusing on students' professional growth.

Shelley Club

The Shelley Club is a literary club of the Department of English, established in 2009. It is led by Mr. M. Karunakaran, who actively organizes various literary activities and competitions for students.

In today’s competitive world, engineering graduates face numerous challenges when they step into professional life. To help them overcome fear and shyness, the Shelley Club provides a platform for self-expression by conducting competitions such as elocution, essay writing, poetry recitation, extempore, and other literary events.

Fine Arts Club

The Fine Arts Club of our college is actively organized by the Department of English to nurture and showcase students' unique talents. It is headed by Mr. M. Karunakaran, Assistant Professor of English. The club inspires and hones students’ artistic and extracurricular abilities, helping them excel in various activities.

The club conducts Enthusia—an inter-school cultural event aimed at discovering young talent among school children—and Talentia, an intra-college cultural fest, along with celebrations such as Pongal Day to provide students with a platform to showcase their skills. A dedicated committee evaluates students’ abilities across various disciplines, selecting the best performers to represent the college in inter-collegiate competitions across Tamil Nadu.
